Most of the revenue you are leaking is a shopper who wanted the thing and did not believe you enough to hand over a card. Conversion is mostly a confidence problem. This is the stack of confidence layers every store should have, with the research behind each one and the client tests where we moved them.
I think about a store the way I think about a building. Trust is load-bearing. You can have a great product at a fair price with strong ad creative, and if the shopper does not feel safe at the moment of the click, the whole thing comes down at checkout.
So I stopped treating trust as a vibe and started treating it as a stack. Six layers. Each one has a number behind it, and each one is something you can audit on your own site this afternoon.

Read it top to bottom. A shopper hits these layers in roughly this order on the way to a purchase, and a crack in any one of them sends them back out.
The shopper has to believe their card is safe before anything else matters.
19% of US shoppers abandon checkout specifically because they "didn't trust the site with their credit-card information." That is one in five carts walking out the door over a feeling rather than a price. The strange part of this layer is that the fix is mostly perception. The site was secure the whole time. The shopper just could not tell.
Baymard ran a perceived-security test on payment-security seals. The finding I keep coming back to: the Norton SSL seal was the most-trusted seal in the test, and a "homemade" or generic seal actually outperformed most of the established SSL vendors except Norton.
